I saw that some people had given this book 5 stars and thought it couldn't be as bad as other reviewers said if some people liked it that much. Boy, was I wrong! I have never given a book only one star before, but this book is terrible. Not only is the writing poor and the story stereotypical, it's trite and ridiculous, especially the part of the story told by "Billy" as an unborn baby and newborn.

No baby is going to have advanced philosophical thoughts about love, "humankind," and the meaning of life. The author has the baby in the womb comparing his experience to "that feeling you get when you open presents..." How on earth would an unborn baby know what a prsesnt is, let alone what it is like to open one???

As an example of the ridiculously adult things this baby thinks, here's a quote expressing his analysis of his emotional state and lack of connection with his dad: "I'm sure that smiling might make [my heart] crack and break into a thousand tiny pieces, letting my spirit seep out, so that I lose my soul. My body is a hollow shell, my face a Chinese opera mask with a painted on smile." Absurd!

There are grammar and puctuation errors, also. Much vulgar language (f-word, sh--, etc,)and blasphemy is used throughout. Not a single character is admirable or likable--the women are long-legged, large-breasted, hard-drinking sluts (some crazy as well), the dad drinks and swears and dates the women, the boy understandably grows up thuggush and also drinks and smokes (starting at age nine).

Horrible, horrible book--and poorly written, too. Thank goodness it was free! I'd ask for my money back otherwise. Now I can just delete it instead.

Full disclosure: I skimmed the middle rather than wasting my time reading it all. The beginng was bad, what I skimmed was worse, and the ending (which I read completely again to be fair) was awful.

Seriously, don't waste time or money on this one.

The Case of Billy B edition by Cindy Vine Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This book grabed me from the first paragraph and didn't let me go. At the end I still was hooked on the characters of Billy and his Dad. Very well written in that it made me feel like I was right there in the story with the characters. I would welcome a sequel to this book. Excellent. Read!
Enjoyed this book. Started a little slow but soon became interesting and hard to put down. Will read more from this author.
Very easy to read. Not many examples of "bad abuse" which I tend to need the abuse to be physical to get deeper into the subjects life. But overall a good story. What was different about this book was the Dad had a hard time too.
This book was pretty good, I could not put it down, I loved the way his dad stepped up to take care of his son, when his mother didn't care about anyone but herself. Billy was very smart for his age... he was a good kid, who never complained, just went with the program... Until his dad moved in with the devil woman......lol. READ THE BOOK YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED.
reading this book from Cindy Vine is something I thought I never read as the story is brilliant
The Case of Bill B well it put a tear in my own eye (yes here is some dude who has a tear in his eye)
to read that Bill fights to wins after all the things him and his dad goes through
giving the book four stars is for the great story that put a tear in my eye well done to you Cindy Vine thank you for the great read
I've read a number of books by this same author and this one was good enough to come back for a second read. I think those who have criticize it may not be ready for books that don't have storybook endings or feel good endings. I liked the inclusion of the point of view of Billy B from the womb, because there are so many voiceless about-to-be-born children who have no say in the abuse that can begin in womb when a pregnant woman thinks only of herself and not the needs of the child she will bring into this world.

For those who think that this story couldn't be true, you only have to look to the local and national news to know the life of horrors some children live, even if their lives are brief. Anyone working in social services or welfare services could testify that never-ending horror stories are the lives far too many children live. Anyone working in those same career fields will also tell you that sometimes the parent's poor decision making and problem solving is also a result of their own catastrophic childhoods. I applaud Cindy Vine for tackling a subject matter that makes people uncomfortable.
The book is written from the point of view of each character in the story and at the same scene every chapter. You meet Billy who's just an embryo inside the womb of Carly, who's in an unhappy marriage with Chris. She commits adultery and abandons her family shortly after giving birth. Without any family support, Chris is forced to quit the military to support Billy as a single parent. He's actually my favorite character in the book because he genuinely loves his son and does everything he can to raise him on his own the best he can. Unfortunately, bad luck tends to follow and he gets into another bad relationship which ends up being fatal. This is the part I didn't get... how could Stella (Chris' psycho girlfriend) get away with all the crime she committed? Could our legal system really be that unreliable? Where are the police or CPS when you need them? Chris sounds like a great father and I felt sorry for him because most of the time it was not his fault. Based on the last few pages of the book, it looks like a bleak future for Billy who starts to get into trouble at an early age, such as smoking & drinking. Would he have been better off in a stable home with his foster parents?
